MSME stands for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. In India, the government classifies MSMEs based on investment and turnover: Micro (< ₹25 lakh investment, <₹5 crore turnover), Small (₹25-100 lakh investment, ₹5-50 crore turnover), Medium (₹100-10 crore investment, ₹50-250 crore turnover). MSME registration under Udyam portal (launched 2020, earlier MSME Udyog Aadhaar) provides access to numerous government benefits: priority lending at lower rates, subsidy on credit-linked capital, GST exemption up to ₹40 lakh turnover, reduced compliance burden, access to government procurement tenders, subsidized collateral-free loans under schemes like PMMY, and training/skill development support. For a startup or small business, registering as MSME can significantly reduce operational costs and accelerate growth through government support schemes. Registration is free and online on the Udyam portal, requiring only Aadhaar and business details. The benefits are substantial enough that most small businesses should register immediately to unlock available support.
