Calculate stamp duty when gifting property to family or friends
Gift Deed Stamp Duty
Gift deed stamp duty is the tax levied on property transfers made as gifts to relatives, friends, or any person without monetary consideration. The stamp duty rate for gift deeds typically ranges from 5-7% depending on your state, and is calculated on the property's fair market value (usually the circle rate or registered market value). Unlike sale deeds where stamp duty is approximately 4-6%, gift deeds generally have similar or slightly higher rates in many states. Gift deeds must be registered just like sale deeds to be legally valid and establish ownership rights. While the property recipient doesn't need to report the gift as income if it's from certain relatives (spouse, parents, siblings, children per Income Tax rules), the donor must still pay stamp duty and registration charges. This calculator helps you estimate the total stamp duty cost before executing a gift deed.
