Calculate returns from FD laddering strategy (staggered maturities)
Total Ladder Maturity
Total Interest (Ladder)
Single FD Maturity (Comparison)
FD Ladder Strategy is an advanced savings technique for investors with larger capital who want both growth and liquidity without abandoning lock-in discipline. Instead of investing ₹50L as a single 5-year FD, you divide it into 5 equal parts (₹10L each) and invest each part for different maturities (1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years). Result: every year, one FD matures, providing access to ₹10L without breaking any FD or suffering early-withdrawal penalties. At maturity, reinvest the maturing FD for 5 years again, maintaining the ladder structure. This approach offers three benefits: (1) Liquidity—₹10L available annually for emergencies or opportunities, (2) Rate averaging—FDs maturing in year 2 capture different rate environment than year 5, hedging interest-rate risk, (3) Reduced emergency fund need—since annual maturity provides cash, you need less emergency corpus elsewhere. The trade-off: slightly lower overall returns vs a single lumpsum 5-year FD (early investments in a ladder earn for fewer years), but the liquidity and psychological comfort often outweigh this ~0.5-1% difference. FD laddering is especially popular among business owners, investors near retirement, and those seeking balance between returns and access.
