Calculate total gain percentage to measure investment profit
Absolute Return
Total Gain (₹)
Absolute Return is the simplest return metric: total percentage gain from purchase to current value. Buy ₹1 lakh worth of Reliance shares at ₹2,500, sell at ₹3,000? Absolute return = 20%. It doesn't account for time taken. Get 20% in 1 month? Same 20% absolute return as getting it over 5 years. This makes absolute return misleading for investment comparison—it looks impressive short-term but ignores annualization. However, absolute return is useful for quick assessment: "How much did I gain overall?" In India, retail investors often quote absolute returns ("My fund has given 50% returns!") but professionals immediately ask "Over what period?" To answer this properly, absolute return must be paired with time period and expressed as annualized (CAGR). Use this calculator to compute absolute returns, then calculate CAGR using the time period to get the true picture for investment decisions.
